Tip: Fight stress with science

Wired has a great article on stress and Robert Sapolsky’s work in this month’s edition. Two sentences really stand out to me:
“While modern medicine has made astonishing progress in treating the fleshy machine of the body, it is only beginning to grapple with those misfortunes of the mind that undo our treatments.”
and
“The moral is that the most dangerous kinds of stress don’t feel that stressful It’s not the late night at the office that’s going to kill us; it’s the feeling that nothing can be done.”
Apparently constant stress leads to an enlarged amygdala gland, and a smaller hippocampus. The amygdala triggers the flight response and turns off everything not necessary to run away from your attacker - things as reasoning and construction of connections in the brain, giving Alzheimer like effects.

- Drink in moderation
- Get enough sleep
- Don’t fight
- Confront your fears
- Meditate
- Don’t force yourself to exercise
